Uniform Glossary
The language of hospitality uniforms.
A plain-language glossary of the terms used across custom uniform programs — from cut-and-sew and MOQ to performance fabrics and department naming.
Uniform Program Terms
- Custom Uniform Program
- An end-to-end service that takes a hospitality property from brand discovery through design, sampling, production, rollout, and ongoing reorder management — delivering uniforms tailored to a single property or hotel group.
- Ready-to-Wear (RTW) Essentials
- A curated selection of pre-designed, stock uniform pieces available for quick ordering without the full custom design process, typically with lower minimum order quantities.
- Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)
- The smallest number of units that can be produced per style. For custom uniforms the MOQ is 25 units per style; custom accessories require 50 units; ready-to-wear essentials require 10 units.
- Reorder Portal
- A property-specific online platform where managers and staff reorder approved uniform styles, track inventory, view usage reports, and manage department- or staff-level budgets.
- Style Guide
- A documented reference included with every custom program that defines fit, layering, accessories, and care across departments so onboarding new staff stays consistent.
Design & Production Terms
- Cut-and-Sew
- A manufacturing method where garments are constructed from individually cut fabric pieces rather than assembled from pre-made blanks, allowing full control over fit, fabric, and branding.
- Design Deck
- The initial set of design concepts — sketches, fabrics, and direction — presented to a property early in the custom program, often delivered within one week.
- Sampling
- The production of a physical prototype garment for review and approval before full production, typically completed in about one week plus shipping.
- Lead Time
- The time required to complete production after designs are approved — usually four to six weeks depending on complexity and volume, followed by shipping.
- Pantone Matching
- Using the standardized Pantone color system and fabric swatches to reproduce a property's exact brand colors across uniform garments.
- Pattern Engineering
- The technical design of garment patterns to deliver full size coverage with fewer total sizes — Drape & Stitch achieves full coverage with up to 40% fewer sizes than typical programs.
Fabric & Performance Terms
- Performance Fabric
- A modern fabric blend engineered for hospitality use — prioritizing durability, breathability, comfort, and stain release during long shifts.
- Invisi-Band Stretch Panels
- Concealed stretch construction built into garments to improve range of motion and comfort without altering the tailored silhouette.
- Stain & Liquid Resistance
- A fabric finish that repels spills and resists staining, keeping front- and back-of-house uniforms presentable throughout service.
- Standardized Care Instructions
- A simplified laundering system — Drape & Stitch programs use just two care instructions across all garments — that reduces laundry errors and extends uniform life.
- Unisex Fit System
- Inclusive garment patterns designed to fit a broad range of body types, streamlining inventory while keeping every team member comfortable.
Hospitality Department Terms
- Front of House (FOH)
- Guest-facing roles whose uniforms shape first impressions — reception, concierge, servers, sommeliers, bussers, and bar staff.
- Back of House (BOH)
- Operational roles behind the scenes — chefs, kitchen staff, housekeeping, and maintenance — whose uniforms prioritize durability and function.
- Banquet & Events Attire
- Uniforms designed for catering, banquet halls, and special events, often coordinated to match a venue's brand for large gatherings.
